Buildings consume 40% of the world’s energy

Almost 40% of the total CO2 emissions in the world come from buildings. Many buildings have been built a long time ago when other or even no requirements for energy consumption were set. Now almost 97% of the buildings in the Netherlands will have to be renovated up to 2050 to meet the climate agreement requirements.

The fuzzy landscape of requirements and rules for energy calculations

The subject of energy has been the victim of legislative changes, changing regulations or misconceptions about energy-efficient measures for several years. What started as a regulation from the EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) was the EPC (energy performance coefficient), but it continued as the EPA (energy performance advice) and now the BENG 1, 2, and 3 (Nearly Zero Energy Buildings). It uses the NTA8800 standard as a guideline, just like the BREEAM.

So indeed all in all very confusing and logical that things might go wrong…

Olysis calculates the real energy balance, but also tests against the standards

Ultimately, an energy calculation is a balance of physics in which the energy entering the building is compared with what goes out. The standards are there to “normalize” these and to draw an equal denominator across the country. Olysis therefore first calculates the “real” value of the energy consumption and generation in a building based on physics, and then compares how this translates to the right norm and regulation. In this way, you can both prove that the design meets the requirements but we also allow you to estimate the future energy bill.
